I recently saw a post lamenting how expensive sewing as a hobby is, which has been nagging me all day and of course now I can’t find it anymore.

It is, in fact, quite an extensive hobby and you can get bogged down by the capitalism monster thinking you need to buy a ton of things right away. You don’t! I’ve been sewing most of my life and have been slowly collecting tools and things as I need them but you can start off real small! Here are some random tips from me to you:

Sewing patterns: there are butt loads of free patterns all over the internet. Check out Mood patterns, Peppermint magazine, and your local library for the pattern bind up books if you’re lucky. However, indie patterns are totally worth the price, especially for beginners. They tend to have great instructions and better fit than the paper patterns you can find in stores and they come from people with a real passion for sewing. If you’re going more historical costuming, some of the free patterns can be finagled, but your best bet (besides drafting) is to purchase patterns depending on your era, just avoid Sense and Sensibility patterns. You can also find vintage patterns, but the instructions and fit are a tad different than you may be used to, especially for beginners. Shameless plug anyway for my vintage pattern shop.

Fabric: don’t be scared of your thrift store! Ive found lengths of fabric a couple times, but I always check for sheets and tablecloths that I like the look and feel of. You can get natural fibers wayyyy cheaper this way and tho it’s an extra step you can dye or overdye to get the color you want. The black fabric in this stack was faded so I dyed it darker black with Rit and the yellow I dyed with marigolds from my garden.

Notions/random bits and bobs: ask your friends and family! Sewing used to be basically ubiquitous and has gone out of style so as a result there are more vintage sewing supplies in the world than you could ever want and usually people hold on to them until they can find a good home. I’ve gotten so much random bullshit from my mom and grandmas and friends just by announcing that I love to sew. Obvi don’t be rude or conspiratorial, but esp older folks love to share their love of the craft.

Machine: cheapest is to inherit one, but you can usually find some older models at thrift stores or on Craigslist/fb marketplace. I found my serger for a decent discount from a company that refurbishes sewing machines.

I hope this helps anyone who is interested in sewing but scared of the starting costs. It’s a bit of a learning and cost curve, but the internet has helped break that down so much.

I Saw Pill Bugs On Here A Few Weeks Ago And Really Wanted To Make My Own! The Pattern Is A Bit Rough
I Saw Pill Bugs On Here A Few Weeks Ago And Really Wanted To Make My Own! The Pattern Is A Bit Rough

I saw pill bugs on here a few weeks ago and really wanted to make my own! The pattern is a bit rough but I hope it works (I tried to get it perfect for like a week before calling it good enough).

Just print out (or copy from a screen) the first page and cut out the pattern pieces. Hopefully the pictures on page two will help but if not I will do my best to answer any questions!

Hope you enjoy and make your own lil isopod friend!

If anyone makes this, I would love to see pictures 💕

Yo. I return with pt. 2 of my cosplay shenanigans. Of any of y’all would like the patterns or instructions in more detail, feel free to put in an ask. c:

Step one: Mr. Compress mask.

Print pattern, cut two, assemble with tape and hot glue. Paper mache both sides and let dry.

Step two: Toga gear

Crochet scarf base, make cardboard boxes for the belt/thigh things, cut off tops of mini soda cans with a can opener, tape seran wrap to the top of said soda cans. (I plan on paper macheing the cans too to make them sturdier)

Step three: Mr Compress vest

I had to altar my vest pattern for this one, so it turned out a little wonky. I still gotta add buttons and hem a couple of the edges, but otherwise we’re chillin (I swear to god it looks better on a mannequin)

Greetingz, Tumblr. I’ve decided that posting my shit might make me more productive, so get ready to see some shitty cosplay. The convention is in October, and I plan on posting my (very slow) progress once every one or two weeks.

I’ve done this before. Last year my friend, my little sister and I went as characters from SpyxFamily. (The friend was Yor, my sister was Anya, and I was Loid)

I might post the stuff from last year if this gets a little bit of attention.

This year, the plan was to go as members from the League of Villains from MHA. However, my sister is a brat (don’t tell her is said that) and switched to Eri after I spent way too many hours figuring out how to do Shigaraki’s hands. BUT! I shall be going as the gay ass magician we call Mr. Compress, and my friend will be going as Toga.

Note: I will NOT! Be saying any names, ages, or any other personal details. Any of my pieces will be on a mannequin or just on a desk or something, so plz don’t expect any human models.

✨✨~ With that, I bid you ado. ~✨✨

i’m currently wrapping my earbuds with yarn instead of making my friends their late christmas gifts.

i’ve decided on just writing them letters and putting small paper + friendship bracelets and such items in them like a pen pal thing.

There’s a regular at the fabric superstore. She’s at least 80 years old, and she just got back into sewing after giving it up for 40 years. We’ll call her Irma.

I love Irma.

Irma is constantly surprised by the newfangled sewing gadgets our store sells. Today she bought some extra-fine glass-head pins and a magnetic pincushion. As I’m ringing her purchases up, she tells me very seriously, “did you know, if you’re careful, you can sew RIGHT OVER those pins? You don’t need to take them out!”

I told her that I liked that you can’t accidentally melt the head of the glass pins with your iron, and she nodded. “They used to all be like that, but times changed.”

I love old sewing machines and asked what kind of machine she has, and she goes, “Oh, it’s an old Singer Featherweight that my husband bought me when we were first married. It’s probably not worth anything anymore, but the thing sews fine. Have you seen the ones those girls over there–” indicating the sewing machine sub-store in my location “–have? Those things go in every direction and the needle always comes to the top when you stop sewing! Imagine how handy that is!”

I mention that I used to sew on my grandmother’s Featherweight but now there’s a intra-family war about who owns Grandma’s Featherweight and so no one gets to use it. It’s genuinely the best portable straight-stitch machine I’ve ever used.

I warn her to never let anyone tell her that Featherweight isn’t worth something. “I know, I miss my husband and it’s always going to have a place in my heart, just like your grandma’s.”

“I mean, Irma, there’s that, but they’re also worth a really notable amount of money. The Singer Featherweight is really financially valuable. I almost never see them for sale around here for less than about $400, and that’s in bad condition.”

“It’s a good thing my husband’s dead, honey, because if you told him that he managed to buy a sewing machine that’s worth more in 2021 than he bought it for in 1950, well, he’d be so smug that I just wouldn’t be able to tolerate driving home with him.”

RIP Joann, now what?

I wanted to make a post I could copy and paste and or link when I see folks asking where to buy fabrics when Joann is gone. I sew a lot, generally between 100-200 items a year and I don't do it on a big budget. Stores are not in a particular order.

Notions:

Wawak.com - start here, mostly stay here. Wawak is a supplier for professional sewing businesses and have the prices that show it. I will not pay for gutermann Mara 100 anywhere else. I buy buttons, tools, thread, and most elastic here.

Stitch Love Studio - this is where I buy lingerie supplies https://www.etsy.com/shop/StitchLoveStudio?ref=yr_purchases

Fabric:

Fabric Mart - this is one where you want to sign up for emails and never buy unless its on sale. They run different sales every day and they rotate. Mostly deadstock fabrics but I buy more from here than anywhere else. Fantastic customer service and if you watch you can get things like $6 wool suiting or $4 cotton jersey. https://fabricmartfabrics.com/

Fabrics-Store - again, buy the sales not the full price. Sign up for the emails but redirect them to a folder because it is TOO MANY. They stock linen or good but not amazing quality. https://www.fabrics-store.com/

Purple Seamstress - This is where I buy my solid cotton lycra jersey. They have other things, but the jersey is what I'm here for. Inexpensive and very good quality. If you ask she will mail you a swatch card for the solids. https://purpleseamstressfabric.com/

LA Finch - deadstock fabrics with a fantastic remnant selection https://lafinchfabrics.myshopify.com/

Califabrics - mix of deadstock and big brands, easy to navigate and always seem to have good denim in stock. https://califabrics.com/

Boho Fabrics - good variety, nice bundles. I have also gotten some really great trims from here. https://www.bohofabrics.com/

Firecracker Fabrics - garment and quilting fabrics, really nice selection and great sale section. I've bought $5 yard quilting cottons here several times. https://www.firecrackerfabrics.com/

Hancock's of Paducah - Quilting fabric and some limited garment fabric. AMAZING sale section. Do not sleep on the sale section. This is my first stop when buying quilting fabrics. Usually the last stop too. Not particularly speedy shipping. https://www.hancocks-paducah.com/

Itokri - This is something a little different. Itokri is an Indian business with incredible traditional fabrics. Shipping to the US is expensive, but the fabric is so inexpensive it evens out. I generally end up paying like $30 for shipping. Beautiful ikat and block prints. https://itokri.com/

Miss Matatabi - this is a little treat. This isn't where you go to save money, but there are so many beautiful things in this shop. Ships from Japan incredibly quickly. https://shop.missmatatabi.com/

Lucky Deluxe - Craft thrift store, always has an incredible selection and fantastic customer service. I need to close the tab fast because I never go to this website without finding something I need. https://www.luckydeluxefabrics.com/

Swanson's - the OG of online craft thrift stores, but I find their website harder to navigate. https://www.swansonsfabrics.com

Honorary Mentions: I haven't shopped at these places yet but I have had them recommended and likely will at some point.

A Thrifty Notion - https://athriftynotion.com/

Creative Closeouts - https://creativecloseoutsfabric.com/ being rebranded to sewsnip.com on March 1 - quilting deadstock

Hawthorne Supply Co. - I just got this rec and I think I need to not look too closely or I'm going to slip with my debit card. https://www.hawthornesupplyco.com/

This is not an exhaustive list of everywhere you can buy fabric, or even a full list of where I shop. There are SO many options out there in the world. You also need to think outside the fabric store box. I thrift men's shirt fabrics for quilts and sheets for backing fabric. I don't do a ton of in person thrifting and my local stores don't get a lot of craft materials but every thrift store is its own universe and reflects the community it is in. Go out and find something cool.

Oh and final note: Don't shop at Hobby Lobby.

fursona crochet crafting furry sfw bnnuy gnomes the gnomes were for a christmas market thing and i also made some for my relatives on my mother's side the marionette doll is hugely inspired/based on/copied from a furry marionette doll that went viral on tiktok last year since that tiktok furry doesnt/didnt have any sort of tutorial i had to work out alot of the process myself which took a while lol i also got into ghost last year and finally decided to try a bit of linocut printing/cutting again :) and a couple of weeks ago i got rly into crocheting and made a bunch of granny square swatches and those two bunnies i also wanna make a granny square blanket but i havent decided on a design yet since there are alot of granny square designs i wanna make but they dont all fit together thematically so instead of making a decision i made the two bunnies the smaller one was the first one and i ran out of the multicolored sock yarn towards the end as you can see lol the second bunny i made with much larger yarn than what they used in the pattern and if id had followed the pattern i dont think id have ha enough yarn and i didnt wanna buy more yarn for just the bunny so i tried downsizing the pattern which is probably part of why it looks quite wonky other than my less than stellar sewing job lol tbh amigurumi type patterns are more boring than granny squares in terms of stitch variety (so. many. single crochets.) but there are more full amigurumi type projects i wanna do compared to granny square projects since im not interested in anything made of granny squares other than like blankets and a whole blanket of a decent size is also alot of yarn and i dont wanna use scratchy but cheap acrylic yarn for a blanket so my color options are currently a bit limited since i dont wanna buy any online (atleast for now) anyways i also made some cardweaving patterns for bookmark ribbons for fanfic bookbinding but im rly procrastinating that im just not rly ready yet for the frustrations that i had with cardweaving a year ago
