While this concept is certainly clever, there are a couple major flaws:
1) Classes (and aspects) have to be monosyllabic.
#monosyllablism was never actually a hard rule #just an extremely common pattern that happened to be that way until it didnt
It’s not just a “common pattern”; it’s a Word of Huss rule:
Q: “Are there classes and titles other than the ones shown so far in canon, or have we seen them all?”
AH: Maybe. Readers tend to make up their own. Some of them sound decent to me, others do not. They can only have one syllable. Any that has more than one syllable is automatically not good.
Q: “Are all God Tier titles made of monosyllabic components?”
AH: Yes. Class and aspect, one syllable, always. This is a rule.
Side note: I saw the “Seer” discussion, and was curious about it myself. The class Seer is pronounced as one syllable. While the "seer” can technically be pronounced “see-er” (two syllables) or “sear” (one), "see-er” is only used for an observer/one who sees, while “sear” is used for a prophet, sage, diviner, clairvoyant, or oracle. I checked the pronunciation and definition to be sure.
2) Waste and Matter work as inverses, but not as active/passive pairs.
Lord and Muse are a class pair that do the same thing in different ways, one actively, one passively. (You use the word “define”, while I prefer “embody”, but the concept is essentially the same.)
Active classes [verb] (with/through) [aspect], while Passive classes invite [verb] of/with/through [aspect].
In order for classes to be a +/- pair, that [verb] must be the same. Waste and Matter are OPPOSITE/inverse verbs, not the same verb.
If Waste is passive and “Invites Disregard” of/with/through [aspect], then its active counterpart must be “Disregards (with/through) [aspect].” But you have Matter as Regard, not Disregard. So yeah, they work as inverses but not a class pair.
Still, the concept is clever and I love the pun it makes.
so this was spawned from the thought that each of the 12 classes kind of form their own ‘quadrant’ when looking at inversion possibilities.
Witch, Heir, Seer, Mage. (All the combos between Active/Passive and Manipulation/Information)
Knight, Page, Thief, Rogue (All Combos between Active/Passive and Application/Relocation)
and Prince, Bard, Maid, Sylph (All combos between Active/Passive and Creation/Destruction)
so I thought wouldn’t it be funny if Lord and Muse and two other fake classes formed their own Quadrant also, so we’d have a quadrant of quadrants of classes :oD (also because I like when numbers add up in a certain way, 12 is pretty on its own as 3x4, 14 is kinda :/ but 16, now there’s a fine number if I ever saw one! 4x4 or (2x2)x(2x2) I love it)
the first one I went to was Waste, Hussies own fake class because lol
then I tried to come up with what their class verbs would be and how’d they interact with each other.
Lord and Muse I’d already had as Define, because they both effect action to have effect on Homestuck in either passive inspiring ways or active domineering ways. Lord being active for Muses passive.
so we have this so far:
-Lord = Defines (Aspect) or Defines with (Aspect)
+Muse = Invites Definition of (Aspect) or Invites Definition through (Aspect)
then for Hussie’s I decided that since he’s said before he will not directly affect the story as an author insert in any way (except for the yellow yard thing) and also because I remember him being all wizard of oz-y with his whole “DISREGARD THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN, HE’S NOT IMPORTANT.” and also because ‘Fondly Regard Creation’ etc.
That Waste and the other class’s Verb would be “Regard/Disregard” as in to look but dont touch, just sit and watch what happens or to ignore it completely, able to watch everything happen but not able to do/change anything about it. To counter Lord/Muse abilities to directly affect what happens while not always seeing everything that happens everywhere?
but Waste being the passive of the two would make it
+Waste = Invites Disregard of (Aspect) or Invites Disregard through (Aspect)
which would make the Active counterpart = Regards (Aspect) or Regards with (Aspect)
which I already love :D
and then the last thing would be to come up with a punny name for that Active Regard Class, that means something actively watching something while also meaning something of the opposite of Waste (Because I still consider Lord/Muse to invert to eachother, they are still Master Classes. Waste and ???Class would invert to eachother too, as the 'joke/unmastered’ classes haha. I like my jokes only when they don’t directly change what is already canon lol so they won’t touch Lord/Muse)
I eventually came up something when I figured it would only be a Matter of Time until I did and then boom. Matter and Waste.
You Waste something when you Disregard it. Something Matters because you are Regarding it (Why pay attention to something that doesn’t matter?).
Waste would be passively inviting you to disregard something unimportant. Matter would be actively regarding something that is important. Both can do nothing but watch events unfold.
so our last Quadrant of Quadrants which includes both the Master Classes and the Joke/Unmastered Classes would be:
-Lord Defines (Aspect) or Defines with (Aspect)
+Muse Invites Definition of (Aspect) or Invites Definition through (Aspect)
-Matter Regards with (Aspect) or Regards (Aspect)
+Waste Invites Disregard of (Aspect) or Invites Disregard through (Aspect)
also something poetic hidden in the fact that while the Author calls himself the Waste in the story. When you ask what really Matters is that there would be no story without an Audience to view it.
Hussie is the Waste of Space, but we the fandom are just a Matter of Time :D
*EDIT* I didn’t mention this originally but I don’t want people to get confused between canon stuff and fanon stuff lol
Muse and Lord are an active passive pair AND an inversion pair, they invert to eachother and they are each others active and passive form. They do both to each other that’s why they are master classes
My additional extra funfanon doesn’t change or interact with that, I like keeping things seperate, so Matter and Waste are also eachothers Active/Passive forms, and they invert to each other as well.
So the opposite of a Matter of Time is a Waste of Space, just like how the Opposite of a Lord of Time is a Muse of Space
My interpretation is that Witches are active and Heirs are passive Magician classes, which involves changing, manipulating, and controlling their aspects.
Likewise, Maids are active and Sylphs passive Healer classes, which involves healing, creating, and (re)generating their aspects.
As far as “giving” goes, that’s something Rogues already do. Thieves technically can give, too, as I see Thieves and Rogues as classes that involve aspect allocation and redistribution, but Thieves are mostly inclined to take, while Rogues are inclined to give or share.
For now, I’ll link some of my related posts:
John the Wizard touches upon the Witch/Heir connection with magic.
Healer Classes: Maids, Sylphs, and Revival describes the Maid/Sylph connection with healing.
Classes Chart is my take on the class meanings, pairings, etc.
Useful Classpect Tools and Resources has links to more information from others (including @dahniwitchoflight).
It’s not much, hopefully it'll provide some insight.
IE: Heirs are diametrically opposed to Thieves: they give their aspect and inspire others to do the same.
John:
All evidence that Breath/Breeze is connected to delivery comes from John, Tavros has flags, but not the mailbox kind.
John uses the Breeze and parcel pyxis to invite giving through breath (note that I’m also assuming that Equius and Mituna had and aspect driven parcel system on their planets).
Upon receiving the ultimate freedom (retcon zaps are said by many to mean breath) and being faced with drowning in oil, John instead zaps the oil away (gives his breath) in order to take on the responsibility of completing his personal quest (in which he also gives the fireflys freedom). It’s noted by Jade that he does this instead of zapping away himself, something which I think is a defining moment for his character.
John fits the messianic archetype, so it would make sense if he would give spirit and freedom in return for responsibility, friendship and warrior spirit (Blood).
Is “giving spirit” something the natural leader does? If so, Roxy and Kanaya talking about John being such a great motivational leader that he makes others better leaders at the same time counts as evidence towards John giving and inviting the giving of Breath.
John takes on warrior spirit when doing the windy thing? This is a bit of a shaky one I admit, but the thing is we often see John sort of “not taking things seriously” and making unnecessary jokes and observations, as if the graveness of his situation hasn’t really set in for him. The only time he comes down off this cloud is when he’s airbending.
When John decides to not go through the gate and is instead pulled back down to earth (in a moment which is cited to show the Breath/Blood dichotomy) thanks to alt Dave’s influence, alt Dave gets wings (as in John gave him freedom/Breath).
Equius:
In this page Calliope mentions that people with opposite classpects can have similar abilities, so Equius might possibly have Thief of Light powers (as in, if this theory is correct Equius should be able to theoretically steal light from everyone by giving them void).
So while Vriska steals the spot-light (ie: relevance, ie: Light) by creating Bec noir, Equius has become part of the most important character in homestuck: Lil'cal, and gives the alpha kids a lack of showdown (bear in mind though that Equius does this to help the humans, whereas Vriska does it to stroke her ego, fitting what we know about passive classes working for the team and active classes working for themselves).
Vriska is also accused of stealing light in the form of agency when she controls trolls, and Equius controls Nepeta’s actions in some respect at the start of Hivebent and also stops her from joining the red team (again because he believes it’s in her best interests). Deceiving his team-mates and becoming the blue team leader counts as giving lies and also another count of stealing relevance.
Equius also gives fakeness in the form of Vriskas arm, Aradia’s body, and Tavros’s legs. Also as Lil'cal he arguably teaches Dirk how to build robots and therefore invites the giving of fakeness?
Equius is probably also the reason the ring of void moved from the human’s alpha session to caliborn’s, ie: he delivered void.
Mituna:
I don’t actually have much to say about Mituna, as we don’t know much about him or his arc. Although…don’t you think it’s funny that the Thief and Heir of both troll sessions had aspect pairs that we pretty much know where opposites?
The Ψiioniic though, fits this theory pretty well. He gives/delivers the ship using his death, and often very gave death to aliens in the form of the Condesce (and invites her to give death).
Medieval connection:
The Heir class represents a medieval aristocrat passively giving away all their inherited fortune. Inheritace itself is them inviting giving.
Edited to clarify some information regarding classes and gender. As a note, I’m pretty sure I made this chart either before Hussie made the statement on female Princes, or before I was aware of it. I’m still keeping the chart as-is, though, for now.
Here’s a chart of all the classes, both Standard and Master.
My goal was to define, describe, and categorize them as efficiently and accurately as possible, based on my understanding of the classes. I based as much as I could on canon information, while inferring the rest.
(For clarity, “–” denotes Active, and “+” denotes Passive.)
(Note: If chart looks distorted/shrunken, right-click and View Image.)
Special thanks to bladekindeyewear, dahniwitchoflight, infinitywhale and probably others for their insight and information, helping me understand the classes and aspects. I couldn’t have made this chart without them.
Some clarification: I am aware Hussie essentially said any gender can have any class (i.e. female Princes). I don’t like the idea of gendered classes, anyway, and I think it’s needlessly restrictive, not to mention sexist and stereotyping.
However, my chart reflects what’s been depicted in comic, based on what Calliope states, looking at the characters’ classes and gender distribution, and then making some inferences based on Hussie’s penchant for balance and based on class names and god tier outfit designs.
I've been reflecting upon my Classpect Profile theory, and I've realized... There's no reason all 12 classes have to be used. All aspects, yes, since that's the whole point of the profile. And each aspect pair still must come in paired inverse classes. But having to use every single class? It just ends up shoehorning classes that may not actually fit a person's interaction with an aspect.
As an example, here's my own recently realized profile:
Sylph of Blood - Prince of Breath
Seer of Life - Witch of Doom
Rogue of Light - Knight of Void
Seer of Heart - Witch of Mind
Sylph of Hope - Prince of Rage
Knight of Space - Rogue of Time
Double Sylph/Prince, Seer/Witch, and Rogue/Knight. Notice how Maid/Bard, Page/Thief, and Mage/Heir classes are not used.
While this revised theory removes the process-of-elimination method (Step 8 of the guide), I think it ends up working a lot better. And if anything, many repeat classes may give a clue of a person's primary class.
Looks like a cinnamon roll, is actually a cinnamon roll: Heir, Page, Rogue Looks like a cinnamon roll, could actually kill you: Witch, Sylph, Maid Looks like they could kill you, is actually a cinnamon roll: Knight, Mage Looks like they could kill you, could actually kill you: Seer, Prince, Thief SINnamon roll: Bard
your method of determining classpects is actually really interesting and useful. i had thought i was a mage of mind for a long time, but then i did this (and of course did some more research on my possible titles) and discovered i fit more as an heir of time! i still have the mage in there since my opposite is mage of space. it works really well!
Classpect Profile? Thanks! I’m glad it helped you! :]
Hi! I was wondering if a Knight of Mind, Heir of Blood, or Seer of Heart would be a better leader?
Well, it would depend.
A Knight of Mind would be good at using façades and choices, exploiting and maximizing the usefulness of thoughts, rationale, and the outer self in order to get things done. If balanced, they could also use their Rogue of Heart inverse to obtain, redistribute, and share souls and inner desires.
An Heir of Blood would be good at influencing and inviting change relating to bonds, pacts, and connections of a group. If balanced, they could also use their Mage of Breath inverse to understand what direction the team should take—their goals and quests—and use that knowledge to act or lead.
A Seer of Heart would be good at understanding the core of each person in the group, such as their strengths, weaknesses, fears, and inner desires. They would then guide the team using that knowledge. If balanced, they could also use their Witch of Mind inverse to change others’ minds—their rationales and decisions—and their outer selves.
I’m inclined to think an Heir of Blood would make one of the best leaders in general, but there are a lot of factors to consider. It’d depend on the individual leading, the group dynamic, the purpose and goal, and what the team actually needed. It’d also depend on how “realized” (and competent) the person is.
Certain classpects are probably naturally better skilled and equipped to lead than others, but each classpect has the potential to be a good leader (or a poor leader), depending on the circumstances.
*For Space/Time, Will is non-conditional and future-tense. For Heart/Mind, Will is conditional (i.e. “if”).
Space: What is (the present). Time: What was (the past) and what will be (the future).
Light: What must be (is too probable/important). Void: What must NOT be (is too unlikely/insignificant).
Hope: What could be (is possible). Rage: What could NOT be (is impossible).
Heart: What would be (based on inner desire). Mind: What would be (based on decision and rationale).
Blood: What should be (is owed). Breath: What should NOT be (isn’t owed).
Life: What could be (is capable/allowed). Doom: What could NOT be (is incapable/not allowed).
Notice the similarities between the perpendicular aspect pairs:
Source: bladekindeyewear
Space/Time and Heart/Mind: be vs. will.
Light/Void and Blood/Breath: must vs. should.
Hope/Rage and Life/Doom: can and may.
Visual-Spatial: Space
Musical: Time
Verbal-Linguistic: Light (and Void)
Existential: Hope (and Rage)
Intrapersonal: Heart
Logical-Mathematical: Mind
Bodily-Kinesthetic: Breath
Interpersonal: Blood
Naturalist: Life (and Doom)

There is something downright ominous about Vriska’s return. Something about it just seems so foreboding and …wrong.
It brings to mind John’s reaction to Caliborn’s retelling of events in “Homosuck”:
Her return is so ominous, evidence suggests that John will eventually retcon his retcon to restore the original Alpha Timeline.
But what makes Vriska’s return so foreboding? What significance will this new Alpha Timeline have upon reality? And why must John undo this change?
Overview of Topics:
Personal growth
Terezi’s inverted behavior
Characters’ meta-awareness
Retcons, void timelines, and semi-stable retcon loops
Caliborn’s statements
Doc Scratch’s omniscience
Alt!Calliope
Gamzee’s importance
Vriska’s Thief of Light and Page of Void roles
Horses: the Ultimate Bad Omen
Vriska’s return is disturbing because it undoes all the experiences and personal growth the heroes have undergone for the past three years on their journey through the Furthest Ring. The very notion contradicts something in story Hussie himself emphasized as important:
They have to face all those issues themselves, or they will never learn and grow as people. […] The journey itself is more important than the destination. The struggle is what builds character and teaches us about ourselves and about life.
He elaborates, comparing Trickster Mode shenanigans to Mario using a Star to overcome obstacles:
But the point is, [Mario] didn't really win. That magic star was actually devastating to his development as a human being. WHY. Because he skipped over many critical trials on his spiritual journey. Mario NEEDS to stomp on all those mushrooms. He NEEDS to bonk those bricks with his head, for the sake of his personal growth. By using the star, he is denying himself many powerful moments of catharsis.
This idea very much applies to John’s retcon powers and using them to change the Alpha Timeline, the events of the story. Like Trickster Mode and Mario's Star, retconning seems like an easy fix, a cheap, deus ex machina solution. It’s cheating. Dave even states, “messing with the alpha timeline [...] almost seems heretical.” Solving problems by retconning them out of existence is ineffectual and does not lead to growth.
By Terezi having John reset the timeline, undoing Vriska’s death, many of the characters will no longer face the challenges and hardships they previously would have. Terezi undoes the guilt that torments her, her abusive relationship with Gamzee, and the healing of her eyesight.
It is absolutely understandable that Terezi would want to do this! How many people wish they could undo something in their lives, especially mistakes they deeply regret making? How many people would change these mistakes if given the capability? However, in doing so, Terezi is denying herself the opportunity to grow and to heal from these experiences.
The events of our lives and the actions we take shape, define, and refine who we are as individuals. By having John retcon Vriska’s death, Terezi is essentially changing who she is and who she will become. Consequently, she’s changing who the other characters are, as well. Terezi is acting as a Witch of Heart, one who changes and controls the core identity of individuals.
The comic even visually hints at this role behavior when Terezi wears Jade’s Witch shoes:
Her Witch of Heart subrole should support her Seer of Mind role, not the other way around! Using the subrole, one’s inverse, as the lead role is not a healthy mode of operation! It spells disaster! This behavior foretells dire consequences.
There is something else foreboding about Vriska’s return. The characters all seem to intuitively KNOW these events are not supposed to happen. They KNOW things have been changed, that this is not how the story is supposed to go, that this is not the intended path of the Alpha Timeline. They have an almost meta-awareness of it.
JANE: But it wouldn't surprise me if the one who dealt my fatal blow was the leader of the raid [Vriska].
JANE: This was the unanticipated factor. JANE: Their leader was someone who was not expected to show up with them at all. […] JANE: You see, Callie, your historical documents make no mention of the leader of the raid, because originally, the curtains closed early on this plucky customer. JANE: But the hero was written back into our story by some inscrutable gambit of circumstance which we may never fully understand.
JOHN: i randomly appeared and knocked vriska out cold, just like the scarf told me to. […] TEREZI: YOU W3R3N'T SUPPOS3D TO DO TH1S! TEREZI: 1 W4S SUPPOS3D TO K1LL H3R! TEREZI: YOU JUST DOOM3D US 4LL!!!
Does Terezi’s reaction sound familiar? It should. Dave reacts the same way when John accidentally “zaps in,” interrupting his and Jade’s conversation and retconning events that originally occurred.
DAVE: you being here DAVE: thats not supposed to happen […] DAVE: its not supposed to go down like this i can feel it JOHN: i know! […] JADE: whatever dave and i were going to argue about JADE: i think the moment has passed JADE: the whole thing is kind of ruined to be honest
Dave has the same thoughts as Terezi: that John should not be there, these events are not supposed to happen, and John has doomed the timeline. John explains to each of them that this is not the case because it’s “not time travel,” yet Dave and Terezi remain skeptical and uneasy.
This meta-awareness and sense of a doomed timeline occurs elsewhere, too: when Aranea puts on the Ring of Life and invades the merged session.
MEENAH: you know all youre doing is making another doomed timeline where everyone dies right ARANEA: Of course I know that.
After the events of Game Over, Roxy and John sense the timeline is doomed, as well.
ROXY: this is starting to feel an awful lot like the end […] ROXY: maybe we should just ROXY: admit to ourselves this is probably what its like when you find yourself in a timeline where everything went wrong ROXY: and you know it means youre doomed
But here’s the thing. In each of those cases, the timeline isn’t "doomed" in the traditional sense, events undone because of time travel. In both cases, events are actually retconned by John, making the timeline not doomed, but void.
John voids the Game Over timeline by going back and retrieving the Ring of Life, preventing Aranea from obtaining it.
Regarding Dave and Jade’s confrontation, John purposefully retcons his retcon, setting events back to how they originally transpired, voiding his interference. He creates a semi-stable retcon loop.
In the new Alpha Timeline, because the characters have this same meta-awareness that these events are not supposed to happen—that Vriska is not supposed to be alive—and they sense that the timeline is doomed, I suspect John will retcon his retcon again, undoing the undoing of Vriska’s death, and creating another semi-stable retcon loop.
Why? Meta-narratively speaking, so events will play out how they originally were intended, how the characters KNOW and FEEL they are supposed to happen. So it won’t undo all the character growth the characters undergo. Besides,
It's also logical, since there is essentially nothing new in paradox space. Everything that can happen is either a visual or substantive reproduction of something which has already transpired on a timeline, offshoot or otherwise.
Another semi-stable retcon loop is bound to occur at some point. We were shown the first one for a reason.
Aside from all the parallels to events surrounding John's previous semi-stable retcon loop, more evidence supports a retcon of this new Alpha Timeline.
Caliborn points out the irony that Vriska “ACTUALLY THOUGHT SHE WAS GOING TO BE RELEVANT” and tells her to “KEEP DREAMING,” which is visualized by a “PSYCHE-OUT!!!” watermark and Vriska losing her head.
In the current iteration of the Alpha Timeline, Vriska’s new life state gives her the opportunity to have greater relevance and importance than before, when she was dead. “Dreaming” can even be a euphemism for “dead,” as death in dream bubbles compares to the state of dreaming and never waking up.
Caliborn seems to know Vriska will not be as important as she thinks she will be, and by telling her to “KEEP DREAMING,” he’s effectively telling her to stay dead. If John retcons his retcon, and Vriska actually remains dead after all, not only will this fulfill Caliborn’s statement, but it would prove to be the ultimate “PSYCHE-OUT!!!” to everyone, particularly to us readers.
Doc Scratch provides another indication John will retcon his retcon. Doc Scratch claims to have “absolute mastery of the Alpha Timeline” alone, any deviations withering from his perception. If the Alpha Timeline remains on its present course, it would make Doc Scratch either a liar or incorrect about this mastery.
When John retcons Vriska’s death, it voids events of the original Alpha Timeline, events Doc Scratch explicitly shows us.
John's retcon turns the original Alpha Timeline, the events Doc Scratch shows us, into a void timeline. If Doc Scratch’s knowledge only pertains to this pre-retcon Alpha Timeline, his mastery is not of the true Alpha, but a voided version of it.
Doc Scratch is omniscient and does not lie. Yet at the same time, he has difficulty with Void.
AG: Sure you know a lot, 8ut I know for a FACT there's stuff you don't know. That's true. But the gaps in my knowledge exist by design. They are the pillars of shadow on which my comprehensive vision is built. Necessary pockets of void meant to effectuate outcomes I've foreseen and which will require my influence. Each dark pocket, in time, will be filled.
Occasionally I discover there are things I have not always known. It gives me the opportunity to make deductions, which are practically always flawless. […] But sometimes that is the nature of these hollows in my perception. It feels a bit like dark water, sloshing about the cavity in my head.
Wouldn’t it make sense for the new, current Alpha Timeline to be eventually retconned back to how events originally transpired? It would make the present Alpha, wherein Vriska lives, a void timeline. Void, which can escape Doc Scratch’s perception.
Considering Vriska “occupied a blind spot” to the Condesce, Jane, and Jade with her return, it seems reasonable she could occupy one of Doc Scratch’s “dark pockets,” as well.
If John retcons his retcon and creates a semi-stable retcon loop, it would validate Doc Scratch's mastery of the final, true Alpha Timeline, and it would reinforce the notion of pockets of Void in his knowledge.
But all of this raises another question: If eventually John is going to retcon the new, current Alpha Timeline back to its original state, what importance does the present timeline have?
The answer is Calliope’s alternate reality self.
JADE: like i said, [Alt!Calliope] just finished telling me that she was able to beat her brother in this reality JADE: but apparently, that wasnt supposed to happen? JADE: so she lived out the rest of her life in a doomed timeline and eventually died
Now, granted, this Calliope could be any Calliope from any regular doomed timeline, but I don’t think this is the case. This Calliope seems too important and special to be a random doomed one. This Calliope indicates her story is tied somehow to our John, the same John with retcon abilities and unstuck in canon.
JADE: and then she did this kinda fancy transition [...] to a story about MY brother... who was stuck in a doomed timeline too […] JADE: almost all our friends had died JADE: and johns only hope was to return to his planet, and attempt to complete his personal quest
Jade’s wording about Calliope is suspiciously similar to descriptions of timelines John retcons: Her defeat over Caliborn isn’t “supposed to happen.” If this Calliope is one who retroactively embodies Paradox Space, it would make sense for her to have been a part of the Alpha Timeline at one point, even if that timeline is eventually retconned. A standard doomed Calliope likely would not have enough importance to have such drastic influence over all of reality itself.
The difference between this Calliope and all other doomed Calliopes, why she unprecedentedly dominated her brother, could be in how they were raised: without Gamzee’s influence. In the present Alpha Timeline, Gamzee is suspiciously absent at the end of the three-year journey.
The meaning of Terezi’s ominous message, “you don’t need him,” has not yet been explained. Perhaps it refers to Gamzee. If removed from the picture, he cannot raise the cherubs, influencing their upbringing, personalities, resources, and knowledge.
Remember, just as Calliope is “not supposed to” dominate, Gamzee is “not supposed to” die. Hussie even states he is “not aware of a single timeline in which [Gamzee] dies.” If Gamzee only ever dies in a void timeline, each time the Alpha retconned so his death never occurs, Hussie’s supposed lack of its awareness makes sense.
If John retcons his retcon, it will make the current Alpha Timeline, wherein Vriska lives, a void timeline in actuality. It seems fitting that a Thief of Light from a void timeline would steal the Alpha Timeline’s Light—its importance and relevance. Not to mention her Page of Void subrole, empowering others to exploit Void—a void timeline—maximizing its use.
However, everything the heroes have done so far has advanced Lord English’s machinations. What exactly will happen is unclear, but all the ominous foreshadowing surrounding Vriska's return hints that something disastrous will occur and force John to go back and retcon this timeline.
One clue is Jane’s phrasing of Vriska’s return and the raid she leads in the merged session:
JANE: The tilt between the friendly and felonious was a true horse race again. A real barn burner in the brewing.
Jane’s colorful wording metaphorically surrounds them with horses.
VRISKA: I think I've just decided that 8eing surrounded 8y horses might 8e the ultim8 8ad omen. Nothing good can ever follow or precede those circumstances.
The Ultimate Bad Omen. Vriska’s return is ominous indeed.
1 in 72: Odds someone will share any given Classpect pair of your Classpect Profile.
1 in 144: Odds someone shares the same Hero Title as you (Master Classes excluded).
1 in 2,123,366,400: Odds someone has the same Classpect Profile as you.
1 in 25,480,396,800: Odds someone has the exact Classpect Profile AND Hero Title as you.
One in over 25 BILLION.
What does this say? There are many people similar to you and who can relate to you. But at the same time, it shows that...
You are unique. You are special. You are one of a kind. And you have a distinct way to impact reality.
How I used all 12 of my roles through my Classpect Profile theory and guide:
Seer of Life I invited others to understand their power and energy to affect reality. Through my own energy and enthusiasm, I invited others to understand themselves better, providing knowledge for potential personal growth.
Witch of Doom I changed the rules for Classpecting!
Heir of Light I invited change in the information regarding Classpects, altering the relevance and significance of other roles in relation to a person’s identity.
Mage of Void I understood the value of roles that were previously unconsidered, unknown, and irrelevant.
Sylph of Hope I invited creation of Hero Title possibilities, allowing people to generate more options for themselves.
Prince of Rage As a result of creating possibilities, I destroyed the lack of options for a Hero Title.
Maid of Blood I created connections between all the classes and aspects, uniting them all as part of an individual.
Bard of Breath As a result of creating connections, I allowed destruction of the disconnection and separation between the classes and aspects.
Rogue of Time I invested a lot of my time putting together this theory and guide, with the goal that others would benefit from it. So I gave my time for the benefit of others.
Knight of Space Uh… Hmm… I made use of Tumblr, utilizing its space as a platform for posting this stuff? I also maximized the usefulness of links and tags …probably?
Thief of Mind I hoarded the logic, reasoning, and thoughts of others (and myself), taking and compiling ideas and theories to come up with my own theory about Classpects. I also redistributed my own thoughts on the subject.
Page of Heart By inviting others to understand themselves and their roles better, as well as creating more Hero Title options, I’m empowering others to discover their core identity, whom they really are, the inner self. I may not have a strong handle on it myself, but I hope others can utilize their information to tap into their potential.
Essentially, I used all of my roles, but all through the filter of my primary, Seer of Life role. The other 11 roles assisted and enhanced the primary role. This is how a Classpect Profile operates.
I recently came across something called the Twelve Archetypes. Apparently it’s a concept by psychologist Carol S. Pearson, inspired by the Jungian notions of personality types and archetypes, as well as Joseph Campbell’s theory of a monomyth (aka The Hero’s Journey).
And, well… Wow. Twelve hero archetypes. That is absolutely the Homestuck class system. While not perfect, they translate really well, too!
Witch = Magician
Heir = Everyman / Orphan
Mage = Explorer / Seeker
Seer = Sage
Prince = Ruler
Bard = Jester
Maid = Creator
Sylph = Caregiver
Thief = Revolutionary / Rebel / Destroyer
Rogue = Lover
Knight = Hero / Warrior
Page = Innocent
Apparently there’s a whole formal, official, scientific-based personality test regarding the Twelve Archetypes called the Pearson-Marr Archetype Indicator (PMAI). (Free version of the test here.)

How am I just now learning of this? There's no way Hussie could have NOT based the SBURB class system on this concept. I don't even.
In my previous post, I posited a theory that all standard classes and aspects can describe an individual, beyond the Hero Title and subrole.
Here's a step-by-step process of how to determine a Classpect Profile, all 12 roles. I will use myself as an example.
1) Divide the aspects into 6 complementary pairs/opposites:
Space & Time
Light & Void
Hope & Rage
Heart & Mind
Breath & Blood
Life & Doom
2) Look at each individual aspect, and consider how you typically interact with it. (See Aspect Keywords post for reference. bladekindeyewear and infinitywhale go into more depth here and here.)
For interactions, here are some keywords for class types:
Manipulate/Change (Witch/Heir)
Understand (Mage/Seer)
Destroy (Prince/Bard)
Create (Maid/Sylph)
Redistribute (Thief/Rogue)
Apply (Knight/Page)
You can also use these keywords for individual classes:
Control (Witch) Influence (Heir)Experience (Mage) Study (Seer)Demolish (Prince) Deconstruct (Bard)Generate (Maid) Mend (Sylph)Take (Thief) Share (Rogue)Exploit (Knight) Empower (Page)
3) Next to each aspect, write the class keywords you think might fit. You should be able to narrow each aspect down to a few potential keywords.
(Note: I recommend starting with the 6 class type keywords instead of the 12 unique ones because it paints a larger picture of the class themes, but if you’re confident (or feel lazy), feel free to start with the 12. You can also mix and match, but just be sure to distinguish types from individual keywords, or it may become confusing down the line. For the purposes of this guide, I’ll start with the 6.)
Possibilities, in my case:
4) Eliminate any keyword that doesn’t have an inverse under an opposite aspect. Inverse keywords are Manipulate & Understand, Destroy & Create, and Redistribute & Apply.
For example, in my case, Manipulate and Redistribute Space don’t have inverses—Understand and Apply—for Time, Space’s opposite, so I can remove them as possibilities.
Narrowed results:
5) Split the class type keywords into individual class (–/+) keywords.
For example, Apply, keyword for Warrior classes, divides into keywords Exploit (Knight) and Empower (Page).
(Note: If you started with the 12 individual keywords, Steps 5 and 6 aren’t necessary.)
6) Narrow your results by removing any class keywords that don’t fit your interactions with an aspect.
7) From there, eliminate class keywords without an inverse keyword for its opposite aspect, just as before. Inverses are Control & Study, Influence & Experience, Demolish & Mend, Deconstruct & Generate, Take & Empower, Share & Exploit.
For example, in my case, Mend Space doesn’t have an opposite Demolish Time, so I eliminate Mend.
8) Use the process of elimination to figure out the rest. No duplicate keywords/classes are allowed, so remove any duplicates of those already solved.
(Note: All class keywords will be used, so if you’re missing any, you’ll have to go back and reconsider your options.)
For example, in the previous step, I narrowed Light and Void to Influence and Experience. That means I can’t use Influence or Experience for Hope and Rage, which narrows Hope and Rage to Mend and Demolish. Likewise, I narrowed Heart and Mind to Empower and Take, because those were the only instances I had of those class keywords.
Simple process of elimination narrowed my results considerably! Most of them are solved!
That just leaves two classpect pairs I’m unsure about, or 4 total.
9) For any remaining pairs left to solve, look at each class description more closely…
…And figure out which descriptions most accurately fit your interaction with each aspect.
In my case, I feel like Knight fits better than Maid for Space, which narrows Space and Time to Knight and Rogue, respectively.
I still can’t determine Breath and Blood, as Maid and Bard both seem fitting. I use dahniwitchoflight’s Aspect posts as a guide, looking at descriptions for all four. Bard of Breath sounds especially like me, and Maid of Blood more than Bard of Blood.
10) Convert the keywords back into classes, and that’s it! You’ve now determined your full Classpect Profile!
I like using my Classes Chart and Aspect Keywords to create a brief description of each of my 12 roles.
Example:
Seer of Life: Invites understanding of/with/through Life (life force, energy, growth, power, persistence, wealth, boldness, enthusiasm, efficacy), guiding others.
All 12 seem pretty accurate to me!
How to determine a Hero Title and subrole Look at which aspect pair has the strongest influence on your actions and perspective. Most likely, it will also match the dual class pair that most accurately describes how you naturally operate in general. Both class and aspect are important to consider, especially if you have difficulty narrowing either down to one pair.
One of those classpects will sound like you at your best; it’s your area of greatest potential and method of having a maximum impact on reality. Its opposite/inverse classpect is your primary focus when you are stressed and in an unhealthy frame of mind, yet it’s also something you can put to good use. You’re probably naturally skilled with both classpects.
Your Hero Title is your best, ideal, and healthiest state, and your subrole is the stressed-but-useful state. Sometimes it’s easier to figure out your subrole first and invert it to discover your Title.
As for me, I am a Seer of Life! My subrole is Witch of Doom.
Alternate possibilities? If you’re not fond of your Hero Title, go with the alternate roles that have the next strongest influence in your life. Most likely, these will be the classpect pairs in which you can easily distinguish a “healthy” role and an inverse “unhealthy” role.
In my case, Heir of Light Mage of Void and Sylph of Hope are strong alternate Hero Titles. (Ugh, why do my top three aspects have to be the color schemes I most dislike? Void is awesome.)
Using an alternate role won’t be as ideal as your primary role, but it’s still a useful option.
Now what? After you’ve determined your Classpect Profile and Hero Title, I highly recommend learning more about each of your 12 roles in Dahni’s Aspect posts. Then use your Classpect Profile however you like!
I hope this guide was helpful and informative!
When people try to determine a mythological role (or "classpect"), they often tend to focus on only one class and one aspect that fit an individual. Possibly two if they subscribe to the inversion/subrole/duality theory. That is, they focus only on the Hero Title and possibly its inverse.
But really, if the 12 aspects are meant to encompass all of reality, and the classes are how one interacts with an aspect, wouldn’t that mean every aspect has influence on an individual, not just one or two of them? That would mean an individual consists of every aspect and class.
I theorize that there are 12 different roles (or classpects) that fit a person—6 unique pairs of roles—comprised of each standard classes and each aspect.
I call these 6 pairs a Classpect Profile. The primary pair is the Hero Title and subrole.
Example profile:
Significance of a Classpect Profile
Essentially, a Classpect Profile helps you gain a better understanding of yourself and how you might affect reality, beyond one or two aspects.
If you’re having difficulty determining your precise Hero Title (and subrole), solving your Classpect Profile can help you discover it, through process of elimination.
A Classpect Profile also provides Hero Title options! For whatever reason, you’re not fond of your primary role, you can choose an alternate role as your Hero Title. Not a fan of the Bard codpiece? Or maybe you have a “gender-exclusive” class opposite of your gender, and you’d prefer one that matches. Maybe your session needs a Space or Time player. Maybe your session has players with overlapping classes or aspects, and you want everyone’s to be unique. Whatever the reason, now you have alternate possibilities!
Determining which roles comprise a Classpect Profile
First, it requires a full understanding of what each class and aspect means. It also requires a lot of introspection, self-reflection, and self-understanding. There are many useful tools and resources to aid you in the process.
In my next post, I’ll guide you through a step-by-step process to solve your Classpect Profile.
Classpect Tests
There are many Hero Title tests available, but the two I like best are thepageofhopes' and inaniloquacity's. Both of them use tests from widely accepted psychology theories as a basis.
While both tests are not without their flaws, they provide a good starting point for determining a Hero Title.
Information
My Classes Chart and Aspect Keywords posts provide a simplified overview of the classes and aspects.
InfinityWhale has an amazing Ultimate Classpect Post describing each aspect and each class in detail.
Dahni has in-depth descriptions of ALL 144 (standard) HERO TITLES! An excellent resource for understanding each mythological role.
Space and Time
Light and Void
Hope and Rage
Heart and Mind
Breath and Blood
Life and Doom
Dahni also describes the tendencies and challenges of each class separately (search her Class tag for detailed information).
BladekindEyewear has a lot of information on classes and aspects, particularly related to duality and inversion. He's basically a father of Classpect Theory, as InfinityWhale, Anna, Dahni, and many others (myself included) base their works on his class- and aspect-related theories.
The 12 Aspects all mean significantly more than their literal meanings. Supposedly, collectively, they encompass all of reality.
Here are some keywords that can be used as substitutions for the actual Aspect names. Not only are they useful for understanding the Aspects themselves, but they're also useful for classpecting purposes, for understanding the meaning of a Hero Title.
When paired with my Classes Chart, these Aspect keywords provide broad, basic, simplified information on what a particular role might do.
Existence
Space physicality, creation, (trans)formation, matter, beginnings, (re)birth, concreteness
Time timing, destruction, endings, inevitability, death, abstractness, meta
Knowledge
Light information, importance, relevance, fortune, luck, agency, visibility, clarity
Void nothingness, lack, irrelevance, submission, misfortune, unknown, obfuscation, invisibility, mystery, secrets, shadow
Perception
Hope belief, possibility, options, wish, realness, imagination, ideas, conception, sexuality
Rage fear, anger, lack of options, fakeness
Psyche
Heart soul, inner self, emotion, desire, love, will, motivation, passion
Mind thought, reason, logic, decision, choice, façade, outer self
Drive
Breath wind, (mis/re)direction, freedom, escape, quest, detachment, disconnection, distance, flight
Blood bonds, relationships, pacts, responsibility, duty, loyalty, unity, attachment, connection, groundedness
Energy

Doom sacrifice, rules, limits, boundaries, decay, restraint, consequences, punishment
Edit 2/21/15: Added keywords to Space, Time, Hope, Breath, and Blood. Changed "self" to "inner self" for Heart (for clarification).
Here's a chart of all the classes, both Standard and Master.
My goal was to define, describe, and categorize them as efficiently and accurately as possible, based on my understanding of the classes. I based as much as I could on canon information, while inferring the rest.
(For clarity, "–" denotes Active, and "+" denotes Passive.)
(Note: If chart looks distorted/shrunken, right-click and View Image.)
Special thanks to bladekindeyewear, dahniwitchoflight, infinitywhale and probably others for their insight and information, helping me understand the classes and aspects. I couldn't have made this chart without them.
I realized something that not only connects Maids and Sylphs, but strongly supports BOTH being Healer classes, as well:
Each Maid and Sylph has died and revived in a non-standard way, AND each revival involved her aspect.
Maid: Heals, creates, and (re)generates (with/through) {aspect}. Sylph: Invites healing, creation, and (re)generation of/with/through {aspect}.
Aradia, Maid of Time
Was dead before her session started. First, she came back by prototyping herself, then by becoming a robot. She eventually revived for real, reaching god tier when her comatose dream self died on her Quest Crypt as Bec Noir destroyed Derse’s moon. Aradiabot exploded as a result.
Her revival involved destruction of Derse's moon and her robot self, being at the right place at the right time, and occurred after the end of their session.
Healing via Time (destruction, timing, endings).
Kanaya, Sylph of Space
Was murdered by Eridan via Hope-blast through the torso. Since her dream self was dead, she couldn’t be revived with a kiss. Unexpectedly, she returned to life, transformed as a Rainbow Drinker.
Her revival involved transformation and came about after space was put through the middle of her torso (physical body).
Inviting healing of Space (physicality) and through Space (transformation).
Jane, Maid of Life
Her dream self was murdered by Jack Noir, “did a lifey thing,” and revived.
Her revival involved the restoration of her life force. Later, this would prove essential for reviving her when her real-self died.
Healing via Life (life force, energy).
Aranea, Sylph of Light
Died along with the rest of the Alpha Trolls as Meenah killed their team before the scratch wiped them from existence. Deciding she wanted to be important and relevant by creating and overseeing a new alpha timeline that prevented the existence of Lord English, Aranea orchestrated events and psychically manipulated others to eventually obtain the Ring of Life. She revived when she placed the Ring on her finger.
Her revival involved manipulating others’ agency, making herself relevant and important, and creating a doomed timeline that she would then heal as the alpha (the most important timeline).
Inviting healing through Light (agency, relevance, importance).
Porrim, Maid of Space
Uh, okay, not much is known about her, and she's not particularly relevant. So...yeah. I guess ignore her. She is both a Rainbow Drinker (troll vampire) and a Healer class Space player, though, like Kanaya, so that might be worth noting.
